Comments:
I was assigned to Rothwesten in April of '56 and worked as an 058. I was transferred to Lubeck when the Altefeld Detachment was closed. We convoyed in POV's and military vehicles to Lubeck. What a sight it was. I assumed responsibility for the 058 section, consisting I believe of a total of 9 individuals, including myself. I can truthfully say it was the most memorable time of my tour in Germany. If anyone knows the whereabouts of Scott Messenger, I'd appreciate a note. One of my best friends Jack Murray, was also stationed at Lubeck the same time I was there although I didn't know him at the time. He is now retired and lives with his wife in Sierra Vista, AZ. I certainly have enjoyed reliving some of the past by reading the comments on this web site. I am working for the US Army in Mannheim, Germany and would love to attend the reunion this year. Someone just drop me a line with the particulars. A true Lubecker, Bill Mc Master

We supported the 8th Infantry Division during the time that General Andrew Goodpasteur was CG. To my knowledge the General never visited our unit in Luebeck but we did go out on FTX maneuvers in support of the Division once or twice a year. One time, a ter the FTX was over, I lead a convoy home from the FTX consisting of vehicles from B Co and the 319th Bn. The whole convoy of over 80 vehicles got pulled over by the MPs. The tail was going about 70MPH just to keep up with us so I must have been going oo fast at the lead. We didn't have a convoy clearance from USAREUR either. I got a ticket for speeding with 80+ vehicles and no convoy clearance. We had to infiltrate back in groups of five vehicles or less. Imagine the conversation I had with our Bn ommander, LTC Brian Gruver, upon checking into Rothwesten. "Sir, we had a great exercise and there is this little matter of a speeding ticket I have to report." As I recall, that was the end of it. However, MG (Ret.)Tom Flynn, who commanded C Co, still reminds me of that ticket and my report to Brian Gruver. There are many more stories. I'm glad to see that Harlan Hanson, our 1st Sgt is signed on to this association and that John Rickels, our DF Site Chief is also. Greetings to them both and to any o you with whom I had the good fortune to serve. Luebeck was indeed a special experience.

Well, Never being in Lubeck, but I was at Rothwesten, and Lubeck was one of our outstations, so by proxy, I suppose I may say something. Lubeck was under B Co, 307 Comm Recon Bn. I was the Company Clerk for Hq Co 307. A couple of wrongdoers came down from Lubeck, and of course mingled with us wrong doers, and done some wronghehe. Not being a clerk type I took the job anyway, had its bennies. I do believe Frank Smith went on to Lubeck after he was assigned to B Co, back in 57 some time or early 58. Have t admit I did envy those who lived on the economy, but we had it good. Best duty I ever pulled. CU sorry I could not be part of the Lubeck gang, rats, oh well. It was all a crazy time in our lives. Wiedersehn!

I was surprised to find this website quite by accident when I was helping my daughter do some research at the University of Buffalo. I just keyed in ASA and -- well, I hadn't a clue. I was station in Altefeld and then moved to Lübeck in 1957. The tour w s short, but it was a wonderful time. I forget the MOS -- Russian intercept. Spent lots of time on the radios and downtown at Das Riverboot. I've been back to Europe several times -- my first daughter was born in Heidelberg, and my last daughter and I pent some time at the Grasshopper in Amsterdam in '96, but I have not been back to Lübeck. I sure would appreciate information about the reunion in 2000.

I went to Lubeck whenever there was trouble with the Crypto equipment. Some of the times I drove up, but most of the time I took the train. The picture of the house looks like the same one I remember from my times up there. I remember going there once nd staying in a motel close to the site. I also remember going there once when the guy who picked me up at the bahnhauf scared the daylights out of me with his driving on a fresh coat of snow. I was in charge of Comm. Ctr maintenance at Rothwesten. I l ft there in Dec. 1958.
